National Training for Counselors and Mentors - Facts

Program Description
National Training for Counselors and Mentors (NT4CM) is a new program launching in Fall 2007 to provide free training and support for counselors and mentors who assist students and their families in preparing financially for college. Professional trainers will not only provide comprehensive
up-to-date information, materials, and resources regarding federal and state student financial aid programs, but participants will also receive ongoing information and support from NT4CM partners.

Participants
NT4CM is available for any individual who advises students and their families on how to fund education beyond high school.

Training Dates and Locations
Training workshops of approximately 4-6 hours will be offered annually and will take place initially in states electing to participate in the NT4CM launch. Participating states will either provide training using the NT4CM materials in their entirety or will incorporate portions of the materials into their existing training programs. The training will typically take place from October through December although some states may offer the training before October or after December. Please visit the Registration page for a list of states participating this year.

If your state is not participating in the initial NT4CM launch, it may provide other training programs for counselors and mentors. The State Training Programs page provides information on other state training programs and/or contact information for determining if additional state training programs are available

Registration
Registration has begun for some participating states. For some states, registration will not be available until we get closer to the training dates. The Registration page will show which states have registration available and will provide a link to that state's registration. For states that do not have registration available yet, the Registration page will provide the dates for when registration will be available.

Federal Student Aid FSA4Counselors provides information on how to join Federal Student Aid's mailing list, a comprehensive variety of publications available for order, as well as tips and guidelines on planning financial aid nights.
National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) includes information on college preparation, as well as a resource guide on how to increase awareness among students and families of the necessity of preparing financially for college early.
National Council of Higher Education Loan Programs (NCHELP) offers a comprehensive and up-to-date library of information on the latest postsecondary financial aid issues.
