FAFSA Deadlines
It is important to note the type (federal, state, and/or postsecondary school) of deadline students are up against for filing the FAFSA. Below are links to fseral and state deadlines. Please encourage students to contact the postsecondary school about its definition of an application deadline, whether it is the receipt date and time or the processing date and time of the application.
Let students know that the U.S. Department of Education considers an application's (or correction's) receipt date and time to be when the application or correction has been successfully submitted. The last page of the online application/correction submission process is called the confirmation page. The student should look for a 22- or 30-character confirmation number. This number contains the exact date and time (Central Time) the form was received. Please recommend that students print the confirmation for their records.
Note: Transactions must be completed and accepted by midnight to meet the deadline.
Tell your students: the first F in "FAFSA" stands for "free!" There are Web sites at which students can get help filing the FAFSA for a fee. These sites are not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education (ED). We urge you to advise your students not to pay these sites for assistance that is provided for free at ED's Web site.
